“Hydra is one of the simplest of
multicellular organisms that can
regenerate any of its lost body parts.
For centuries, people have been
intrigued by its immense regenerative
capability and many perceive it to be a
'sack of stem cells'. Just like a scene out
of Terminator, a dissociated hydra is
able to completely re-assemble and
regain its original structure in a matter
of days. This extraordinary potential to
re-form the body structure from a soup
of cells is limited to hydra.
Understanding regeneration in hydra
becomes even more important as most
of the genes that are involved in this
process are conserved in humans.
A complete understanding could
someday form frameworks for
regeneration in humans & injury repair”.
